Immigration Overview
The United States does not operate like a European expat destination. There is no passive-income visa, no digital nomad visa, and no retirement visa. Permanent residency flows through employer sponsorship, family relationships, extraordinary ability, or substantial investment, and even the most common employment route (H-1B) runs through an annual lottery with roughly a one-in-five selection chance. For Indian and Chinese nationals, the EB-2 employment green-card category is effectively unavailable under current priority dates, with backlogs measured in decades.
On tax, the US is one of only two countries with citizenship-based worldwide taxation. Green card holders and citizens owe US federal tax on worldwide income every year, with no minimum presence and no exemption for foreign-source income. FBAR and FATCA compliance add thousands of dollars annually in professional costs for anyone with foreign assets.
