What the headline leaves out

01

Who qualifies

Nationals by origin of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea or Portugal, plus people of Sephardic origin.

02

When the clock starts

Article 22 of Spain’s Civil Code reduces the usual ten-year residence period to two years for the eligible groups. Residence must remain legal, continuous and immediately before the application.

03

The catch

The clock is dramatically shorter, but processing comes after the two years. Applicants still need good civic conduct and sufficient integration; CCSE and DELE requirements depend on the applicant’s circumstances.
