The Expatriator Index

Strategic Relocation for Uncertain Times

Not "best places to live." The best base for your strategy in an era where nobody knows what 2028 looks like.

The Moment

A Structural Shift in Who's Moving

142K

This isn't tourists or retirees. This is strategic relocation driven by AI job displacement, tax optimization, geopolitical hedging, and the loneliness epidemic.

The old question: "Where's the best place to live?"
The new question: "Where's the best base for my strategy?"

The Market

Who's Actually Relocating in 2026

πŸ€–
AI-Displaced

Entry-level jobs hollowed out. Seeking opportunity where demographics favor them.

FIRE Seekers

Geo-arbitrage cuts FI number by $1M+. "FI without RE" is the new trend.

Tax, regulation, political optimization. UK losing 16,500 HNWIs annually.

Values-driven
🧘

90%+ seek wellness
πŸ‘΄
Demographic Arbitrageurs

Young workers relocating to aging countries. Germany, Spain need workers.

600K migrants/yr needed

The common thread: These aren't "expats" in the 2015 sense. They're strategic relocators optimizing for uncertainty.

The Problem

Existing Indices Were Built for a Different Era

The 2015 Index Mindset

  • Pick the "best" place to live
  • Optimize for quality of life
  • Stable career leads to stable location
  • One country, one plan
  • "Expat" = corporate assignee
  • Nightlife and entertainment matter
  • University credentials open doors

The 2026 Reality

  • Pick the best base for your strategy
  • Optimize for optionality under uncertainty
  • Careers are volatile; location is flexible
  • Multiple residencies, Plan B passports
  • "Expat" = nomad, FIRE seeker, AI worker
  • Community and belonging matter
  • Skills and portfolio open doors
The core insight: Nobody is choosing a place to live forever. They're choosing a base from which to respond to whatever happens next. The index should measure strategic positioning, not static quality of life.

Our Approach

5 Dimensions of Strategic Positioning

ACCESS FREEDOM

"Can I get in, stay, and leave?"
  • Visa availability for your profile
  • Work rights flexibility
  • Exit friction (tax, departure)
  • Travel mobility from base

ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY

"Does the math work long-term?"
  • Cost vs income source
  • Tax burden (your scenario)
  • Currency exposure
  • Banking accessibility

FUTURE OPTIONALITY

"What doors open from here?"
  • Path to PR/citizenship
  • Passport quality
  • EU access (for non-EU)
  • Demographic leverage

COMMUNITY DENSITY

"Will I belong?" ADRI
  • Social fabric strength
  • Cultural openness
  • Profile-specific reception
  • Integration pathways

RESILIENCE BASE

"Can I weather uncertainty?"
  • Political/economic stability
  • Healthcare quality + access
  • Infrastructure reliability
  • Food/supply security
Key differentiator: We measure optionality, not optimization. A slightly worse quality of life that opens more doors scores higher than a perfect spot that locks you in.

Personalization

One Index, Different Weights

Default weights adjust based on who you are and what you're optimizing for. No "global best" - only fit for YOUR profile.

Profile ACCESS ECONOMIC OPTIONALITY COMMUNITY RESILIENCE
AI-Displaced Worker 25% 20% 30% 15% 10%
FIRE Seeker 20% 35% 20% 15% 10%
Regime Arbitrageur 15% 30% 30% 10% 15%
Digital Nomad 30% 25% 15% 20% 10%
Family (with kids) 15% 20% 15% 25% 25%
Political Refugee 25% 15% 25% 20% 15%
Wellness Migrant 15% 20% 10% 25% 30%

Green cells = highest weight for that profile. Users can adjust weights or use presets.

Proprietary Research

The ADRI Advantage Original Research

What is ADRI?

The AI Deference Risk Index measures which societies are most vulnerable to outsourcing judgment to AI. The key insight: relational density, not technological sophistication, is the primary structural defense.

Mediterranean countries score as most resilient

Dense family networks, multigenerational households, neighborhood ties, "third places" (bars, plazas, markets) create load-bearing infrastructure for human judgment.

Anglosphere scores as most vulnerable

Suburban atomization, declining third places, weak family ties leave people with only themselves - and AI - as corrective.

Why this matters for relocation: Countries with dense social fabric are harder to break into but better for long-term belonging. Countries optimized for individual freedom may be easier initially but lonelier long-term.

COMMUNITY DENSITY FACTORS Social Fabric Multigenerational households Neighborhood reciprocity Third place availability Community events & rituals Cultural Openness Historical reception of outsiders Integration pathways Language accessibility Bureaucratic friction Profile-Specific Reception How does YOUR demographic fare? (Honest about race, religion, etc.) ADRI integration makes us honest about belonging, not just access.
The irony we own: We build AI that reduces your need for AI. Dense human networks are the defense against isolation. We're a tool, not a therapist.

Why Now

AI is accelerating the timeline

66% of enterprises cutting entry-level hiring. 23M American jobs 50%+ automated. Young workers are not waiting for careers to stabilize.

Demographic arbitrage is real

Germany needs 600K immigrants/year. Italy issuing 500K work visas 2026-28. Spain, Japan, Korea paying people to come.

Currency hedging is mainstream

Dollar -13% vs Euro in 2025. "Regime arbitrage" no longer fringe wealth strategy - it's middle-class financial planning.

Loneliness is driving moves

"Closer to family" is now #1 reason for US interstate moves. People are explicitly relocating for community, not just jobs.
