Morocco

Long-stay residence & the retiree pension deal

Morocco offers a warm, French-speaking life a short flight from Europe, at a third to a half of Southern European costs — with a genuine tax break for foreign pensioners and an easy long-stay residence route, if not a fast path to citizenship.

Immigration Overview

Morocco has drawn European retirees, remote workers, and creatives for decades, and the appeal is straightforward: winter warmth, a rich culture, low costs, and a working language — French — that lets newcomers run a life from week one. There is no dedicated retirement or digital-nomad visa; instead, most settlers enter visa-free, then apply for a residence card (carte d'immatriculation) after arrival.

The standout financial draw is for retirees: foreign pensions transferred to Morocco qualify for an 80% reduction on the tax due. Working-age movers should note the flip side — Moroccan tax residents are taxed on worldwide income, so Morocco is a cost arbitrage, not a territorial tax haven.

Future Outlook

Morocco: The Next Decade

The most convincing development story on the Mediterranean's southern shore — Africa's biggest car industry, a World Cup 2030 build-out, cheap solar and green-hydrogen ambitions, and OCP's phosphate reserves — set against its two hardest constraints: water and freedom. Our strategic 5–10 year outlook weighs Morocco's nearshore-and-green upside, retiree pension deal, and French-language ease against the drought risk, the worldwide-income tax reality, and the things you cannot say, and tells you who should plant roots and who should stay flexible.

General Requirements

Common requirements for Moroccan residence:

  • Valid passport (with adequate remaining validity)
  • Proof of sufficient income or a Moroccan employment/business basis
  • Proof of accommodation in Morocco (lease or property title)
  • Criminal record certificate from your home country
  • Medical certificate
  • Passport photos and completed residence-card application
  • Filed with the local police (DGSN) after entry

There is no worldwide-income exemption for tax residents, and the dirham is not freely convertible, so get tax and currency advice before moving money or committing to property. Processing runs through local authorities and rewards a French-speaking fixer for the paperwork.
