Why this profile scores this way

Digital Nomad puts 25% on ACCESS and 20% on ECONOMIC because easy entry, workable economics, and a strong daily life matter more than a passport track. Bulgaria's ECONOMIC score of 6.9 helps; COMMUNITY at 5.2 keeps the overall result to 59/100.

Immigration Overview

Bulgaria combines the EU's lowest household-price level with a 10% flat personal income-tax rate, Black Sea beaches, and mountain skiing. Sofia is a compact capital with a growing digital community.

The new Digital Nomad Visa makes Bulgaria more accessible for remote workers. The country joined the EU in 2007, completed full Schengen membership in January 2025, and joined the eurozone in January 2026. English is increasingly common in cities, though Bulgarian (with Cyrillic alphabet) presents a learning curve.

Future Outlook

Bulgaria: The Next Decade

A low-cost EU convergence bet: euro credibility, flat tax, Sofia’s software depth, and real value — offset by language, demography, governance, and healthcare constraints. Our outlook tells you who should plant roots and who should treat Bulgaria as a tactical base.

General Requirements

Common requirements for Bulgarian residence:

  • Valid passport
  • Proof of income or employment
  • Health insurance valid in Bulgaria
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Clean criminal record
  • D-type visa application at Bulgarian consulate

Bulgaria's new Digital Nomad Visa is still being refined, and tax residence remains a separate test. Anyone staying more than 183 days or moving their centre of vital interests should model the 10% tax on worldwide income, treaty relief, and social contributions before applying.
